Starways Arts Centre was founded in 1991 by newly weds Gwyneth Lloyd and Anton van der Merwe. At the time the property was covered in brambles and pine trees, with no running water, electricity or structures. After moving their belonging and an entire wood-framed house from Johannesburg, the couple set up camp - literally - and began to build their dream
As the Pottery, cottages, Rose Theatre and other structures began appearing, the backbone of Starways began to emerge. And after studying and living for some time over seas, so too did Gwyneth and Anron’s children: Vale van der Merwe, Pearce van der Merwe and Eliot Lloyd Short. Each of them has since influenced the development of Starways in their own way and the sense of community continues to grow day by day.
Starways has hosted many concerts, enjoys a continual stream of visitors and is often used for workshops and creative retreats. If you would like to visit, please contact us here, or just jump in the car and pop in!
how to get here
Starways Arts Centre is located in Hogsback, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

There is a shuttle bus for backpackers from East London, a train that goes to Queenstown and a coach that goes to Cathcart and Grahamstown, all of which are just over an hours drive from Starways.
Hogsback is not the easiest place to get to, but it’s location makes it ideal from getting away from it all.
Once you are here, please follow these directions:
When travelling along the main Hogsback road (R345) turn into Plaatjieskraal Road. There is a sign to Starways on the corner of Plaatjieskraal Road and if you follow a number of twists and turns you will see another Starways sign at the corner of Booysens Crescent.
